Note: Vehicles manufactured from 8/93 onwards, as well as models with a 1.9L turbocharged diesel engine and with G60 and VR6 engines, are equipped with a poly V-belt instead of a V-belt for driving the alternator, see next chapter.
V-belt for generator drive

4-cylinder petrol engine: loosen the tension bracket bolts "1" and the generator by approximately 1 turn.
Caution: The generator should only be slightly loosened so that it can swing to the side under its own weight.

Diesel engine: tension nut "2" is located under the alternator. Loosen bolts "1" and lock bolt "3" at least 1 turn. The alternator should now be sufficiently mobile.
Turn tension nut "2" to the left, this will loosen and remove the V-belt.
Apply the V-belt.
Please note: If the V-belt is replaced, a genuine V-belt of the same size from VW must be installed.
Turn the tension nut to the right to tension the V-belt. The V-belt will be tensioned correctly. If for a used V-belt, the tension nut is turned to the right with a torque of 4 Nm, and for a new V-belt - with a torque of 8 Nm. While holding the nut in this position, tighten the fastening bolts with a torque of 35 Nm.
Note: A torque wrench with a SW 32 ring spanner is required to tighten the tension nut. A standard HAZET 2593-22 spanner with a torque wrench and a SW 13 strongly offset ring spanner can also be used.
Tighten the generator and tension bracket mounting bolts.
Vehicles with additional equipment such as power steering and air conditioning have additional V-belts to drive the power steering impeller pump and compressor. For the tension of these belts, see the chapters "Steering" and "Heating system".
