Since the brake booster only works when the engine is running (except for vehicles with anti-lock braking device), then on vehicles with an idle engine, the brake pedal must be pressed harder!
On vehicles with power steering, when the engine is not running, more force is also required to turn the steering wheel because the power steering is not working.
The tow rope must be elastic in order to have a gentle effect on both the towed and the towing vehicle. Only use a rope made of synthetic material or with an elastic intermediate link. However, the safest is the use of a tow bar.
Vehicles with or suspected to be defective in the ignition system may only be towed with the TSZ-H system relay plug disconnected.
The engines of vehicles with an exhaust gas catalyst must not be started by towing over a long distance, see chapter «Exhaust system».
If there is no oil in the gearbox, the vehicle can only be towed with the drive wheels raised.
Towing vehicles with automatic transmission
Gear lever in position «N».
Maximum towing speed: 50 km/h!
Maximum towing distance: 50 km!
When towing long distances, the front of the vehicle must be raised. Cause: When the engine is not running, the gearbox oil pump is not working, so the gearbox will not be sufficiently lubricated for a long time at high speeds.
