Removing
Remove the cylinder head see above.
Caution: If valve drive parts are reused. they must be installed in their original places. To avoid rearrangement of parts in places, it is recommended to prepare an appropriate laying board.
Remove the camshaft see above.
Mark and pull out the poppet pushers.
Attention: Place bucket tappets on a working surface (camshaft side) down.
Remove valve springs. In workshops, a special tool is used for this (VW2037). Crackers, and with them the valves and valve springs, can also be removed using a standard valve spring remover. To do this, the inlet or outlet pipes must first be removed, as the case may be. If the valve springs are compressed with the HAZET 2577-2 tool, first place a rag on the side of the combustion chamber so that the valves cannot fall down.
Compress the valve springs and remove the crackers. Remove the upper valve spring plate and springs. Take out the valve.
Remove the oil seal see below.
Lower plates of valve springs (arrow) remove with special tool VW-3047 or HAZET 791-5/791-2.
Installation
Before installing the valves, check and, if necessary, finish or lap the valve seats, see below.
Attention: New valve spring plates have very sharp edges in places at the bottom edge of the cracker hole. These edges may damage (scratch) valve stems. Replace damaged valves, remove sharp edges from valve springs before installation.
Insert the lower valve spring plate. The valve spring plates have a wide chamfer on the outside -A- and a chamfer on the inside (arrow B).
Remove sharp edges from the surface of the valve stem in contact with the crackers.
To improve reliability, be sure to replace the valve stem seals.
The valve stem is easy to lubricate and insert the valve.
Put on a new oil seal, see below.
Attention: If assembly is carried out without a plastic guide sleeve, the valve stem seals will be damaged. The engine will use a lot of oil!
Install the valve springs and top spring plate. If the valve springs are replaced, then only both at the same time.
Compress the valve springs with a valve spring remover and insert the crackers so that they lie in the grooves of the valve stem. Loosen the spring extractor and insert the next valve. Do not interchange exhaust and intake valves.
Lubricate all bucket tappets with engine oil and, in accordance with the marking, insert into the holes.
Install the camshaft see above.
Replace the cylinder head gasket, install the cylinder head, see above.
