Rack for valve drive parts

Removal

1. Remove the cylinder head.

Attention! If the valve drive parts are to be installed again, they must be installed in the old places. In order not to mix up the parts, it is recommended to make a special rack from foam plastic (see Fig. Rack for valve drive parts).

2. Remove the camshaft.

3. Mark the plate tappets and remove.

Attention! Plate pushers must be stored with the working surface facing down (side facing the camshaft).

4. Remove the valve springs. For this purpose, the factories use a special tool VW-2037. You can also remove the conical crackers, valves and springs using regular, commercially available valve spring pliers. But then you need to additionally remove the intake and exhaust manifolds.



5. Compress the valve springs and remove the cone crackers. Remove the upper valve spring plate and springs. Remove the valve.

6. Remove the oil deflector cap.



7. Remove the lower valve spring plate (arrow) using the VW-3047 or HAZET 791-5/791-2 tool.

Installation

1. Before installing the valves, check the valve guides and, if necessary, trim or grind the valve seats (see subsection 2.10.3).

Attention! The new valve spring plates on the lower edge of the cone cracker hole have very sharp edges in places that can damage the valve stems (risks, etc.). Replace damaged valves. If necessary, remove burrs from valve spring plates before installation.

2. Install the lower valve spring plate.

3. Clean off any burrs on the valve stem where the cone crackers meet.

4. For safety reasons, the oil deflector caps must always be replaced after dismantling.

5. Lubricate the valve stem with a thin layer of oil and install the valve.

6. Install a new oil deflector cap.

Attention! If the installation is carried out without using a plastic sleeve, the oil deflector caps will be damaged! In this case, excessive oil consumption will be observed!

7. Install the springs. If the valve springs are to be replaced, replace the springs in pairs (both at once).



8. Install the upper valve spring plate. The valve spring plates have a wide chamfer on the outside (A) and a chamfer on the inside (arrow B).

9. Compress the springs with spring compressor pliers and install the conical crackers so that they fit into the valve grooves. Loosen the pliers and install the next valve.

10. Check the axial clearance of the camshaft (see subsection 2.7).

11. Lubricate all plate tappets with engine oil and install them into the holes according to the marks.

12. Install the camshaft (see subsection 2.7).

13. Replace the cylinder head gasket. Install the cylinder head (see subsection 2.6.1.1).
