Cylinder head and valves — general information (VW Sharan 1)

Before you begin any work on the cylinder head, review the following general information on the design of the valve timing mechanism:

• the overhead camshaft is mounted on five bearings;
• the rear bearing serves to guide the camshaft axially;
• removed on previously produced engines for the purpose of engine lubrication, the fourth camshaft bearing cap is now reinstalled and is a normal bearing cap;
• before treating valve seats, be sure to read the recommendations given in section 3.3.3;
• the manufacturer in most cases does not indicate the exact data for checking the clearance in the valve drive mechanism, the length of the valve springs in a relaxed state, etc. If there are any doubts about the specified values, you should contact a Volkswagen service station, where you can get more accurate information;
• valve spring plates, springs and valve stem seals are difficult to access as they are located in recesses in the cylinder head;
• when removing valves, pay attention to how these parts were installed, the location of the tappets, valve stem halves (crackers), valve plates, internal and external springs, and valve stem seals.
