General instructions
Attention: When starting the engine in enclosed spaces, remember that if there is insufficient ventilation, there is a danger of fatal carbon monoxide poisoning!
Place the shift lever in neutral before starting the engine (for automatic transmission, set the selector lever to the position "R" or "N").
In the cold season, before turning on the starter, it is recommended to press the clutch pedal.
Engage the starter by turning the ignition key to position 3. As soon as the engine starts, release the key immediately to prevent the starter from continuing to operate while the engine is running.
Immediately after starting a cold engine, more severe than usual valve knocking may be heard, as it takes some time for the hydraulic tappets to fill with oil and adjust the valve clearances.
You should not warm up the engine for a long time on a stationary car - you can start driving immediately after the engine starts to work steadily!
If an attempt is made to start the engine by towing, on vehicles with a catalytic converter in the exhaust system, the vehicle should not be towed more than 50 m, as unburned fuel entering the catalyst may damage it.
Before towing the engine, use (if possible) the battery of another vehicle.
Gasoline engines
The gasoline engine is equipped with an automatic starting device that automatically selects the composition of the fuel-air mixture depending on the outside temperature, so when starting a cold engine, you do not need to touch the gas pedal.
If the engine does not start immediately, abort the start after 10 seconds of starter operation and try again after half a minute. If the engine does not start when you try again, check the fuel pump fuse.
When starting a hot engine, sometimes you need to lightly press the gas pedal.
Diesel engines
Preheating device. In the 55 kW diesel engine, preheating is automatically switched on when the driver's door is opened and then closed. If the engine is not started after this, then after each opening and closing of the driver's door, preheating is not activated.
In a 66 kW diesel engine, preheating is activated after switching on "ignition", while the control lamp on the instrument panel lights up during warm-up. The light goes out when the engine coolant reaches the correct temperature.
Starting a cold engine (only 55 kW motors). To facilitate starting a cold engine, a special starting device is installed. To turn on the starting device, you need to pull out the handle located to the left of the steering column. In addition, this knob can be used to increase the idle speed of the engine during warm-up to reduce vibration.
Engine 55 kW
Starting a cold engine. At ambient temperatures down to -15°C, the starter handle must be fully extended before starting. At lower temperatures, pull out the handle only after a few starts "ignition". Turn the key in the ignition switch to position 2 - this turns on the preheat lamp. It stops burning when the temperature necessary to start the engine is reached.
While preheating is in progress, do not turn on other electrical appliances to avoid overloading the battery.
Start the engine immediately after turning off the control light. Do not press the gas pedal while starting. If only sporadic uneven flashes occur in the cylinders, hold the starter on for a few seconds (maximum - half a minute), until the engine starts to run on its own. If the engine does not start, preheat again and restart as described above. If the engine still does not start, check the preheater fuse.
After the engine has warmed up to the required temperature, insert the starter handle all the way back. If vibration is felt at idle due to unstable engine operation, the handle can be pulled out a little until the engine, having warmed up, starts to work steadily at low speeds.
Starting a warm engine. If the preheat indicator does not come on when the ignition is switched on, the engine can be started. In this case, do not pull the starter handle and do not press the gas pedal.
Engine 66 kW
Starting a cold engine.
At ambient temperatures above +5°C, the engine can be started without preheating. During the start, do not press the gas pedal.
At an outside temperature below +5°C: Turn the key in the ignition switch to position 2, the preheat control lamp lights up, which goes out when the temperature required for starting is reached.
During preheating, do not turn on other electrical appliances, so as not to overload the battery.
After the control lamp has gone out, start the engine. If it does not start, preheat again and restart as above. If the engine still does not start, check the preheater fuse.
Starting a warm engine
If the preheat indicator light is off, the engine can be started.
After running the engine for a long time under heavy load, do not immediately stop it, but let it idle for about 2 minutes, so that when the coolant circulation stops, there will not be a large temperature difference between different parts of the engine.
Attention: After the engine is stopped, the radiator fan may continue to work for some time even with the ignition off (up to 10 minutes). In addition, the fan may suddenly turn on after a while if:
- the temperature of the coolant in the radiator has increased due to natural circulation;
- a warm engine is additionally heated by the strong sun.
When working in the engine compartment, be especially careful! On vehicles with a catalytic converter, the engine must not be turned off while the vehicle is in gear, as unburned fuel could then damage the catalytic converter.
