The engine letter designation and number are located on the "arrow" sticker attached to the timing cover. The engine letter designation is additionally indicated on the vehicle identification plate and on the cylinder block above the gearbox. The engine number consists of a maximum of nine characters (alphanumeric). Part one (maximum 3 letters) represents the "engine letter designation", and the second part (six-digit) "ordinal number".
After more than 999,999 engines with the same letter designation have been produced, the first of the six digit positions is replaced by a letter. Cars for some countries do not have a manufacturer's plate.
