Drain
WARNING: When opening the expansion tank, hot steam may come out.
Remove crankcase protection. Release spring clip and remove coolant hose -2-. Position -1- is ignored.
Gulf
Caution: Only tap water may be used for the mixture. Artesian water does not have the required characteristics to ensure the functional qualities of the coolant.
Note: On vehicles from model year 2003, only C 12 plus-plus, which complies with TL VW 774 G, may be used as a concentrate. G 12 plus-plus can be mixed with the old G 12 plus! Both concentrates have a distinctive feature: lilac color. Additives marked "according to TL W7 774 G" and/or "according to TL VW 774 F" prevent freezing of the coolant and the formation of corrosion and scale. In addition, they increase the boiling point of the coolant. Therefore, throughout the year, the cooling system must necessarily work with an antifreeze and anti-corrosion concentrate. Especially in countries with a tropical climate, at high engine loads, a coolant with a high boiling point reliably protects the engine during operation. The freezing point of the coolant must be at least -25°C (in countries with an arctic climate - not less than -35°С). It is also forbidden to reduce the proportion of concentrate in the coolant in the warm season or when operating in countries with a warm climate by adding water to the cooling system. The share of concentrate should be at least 40%. If, due to climatic conditions, the freezing point must be lowered, the proportion of concentrate can be increased, but not more than 60% (freezing temperature in this case will be about -40°C). If this limit is exceeded, the freezing point will rise again and, in addition, the heat capacity of the coolant will decrease. When replacing the radiator, heater heat exchanger, cylinder head or HEC gasket, the drained coolant must not be reused. Recommended mixing ratios (use only tap water).
The amount of coolant to be filled may vary depending on the vehicle equipment.
Freezing point up to | Share of concentrate | Concentrate | tap water |
-25°C | 40% | 2.25 l | 3.35 l |
-35°C | 50% | 2.8 l | 2.8 l |
With coolant filling tool -VAS 6096-
Top up coolant using cooling system filling tool -VAS 6096-
Without coolant filling tool -VAS 6096-
Fill with coolant up to the max. on the expansion tank.
With and without coolant filling device -VAS 6096-
Close expansion tank. Switch off the heater.
Vehicles without auxiliary heater
Start the engine and maintain the engine speed at 2000 rpm for about 3 minutes. Leave the engine running until the radiator fan -V7- is switched on.
Vehicles with auxiliary heater
Caution: The auxiliary heater can only be switched on if the coolant circuit - as described below - is filled. Connect tester -VAS 5051B- as follows. Connect the connector of the diagnostic cable to the diagnostic connector in the footwell area of the driver's seat. Start the engine and maintain the engine speed at 2000 rpm for about 3 minutes. On the display, press the buttons in sequence "Vehicle self-diagnosis", "18 - additional / autonomous heater" And "03 - Final control diagnostics". Press the right arrow key on the display until you reach the menu item for actuator diagnosis for heater coolant shut-off valve -N279-. Now start final control diagnosis for heater coolant shut-off valve -N279-. Hold further - for about one minute - the speed at 2000 rpm. Leave the engine running until the radiator fan -V7- is switched on.
Continuation for all cars
Check the coolant level and top up if necessary. When the engine is warm, the coolant level should be at the max mark, and when the engine is cold, between the min and max marks.
