CAUTION: When opening the expansion tank, hot steam may escape. To avoid eye injury and scalding, wear protective glasses and special clothing. Cover the cigarette butt lid with a rag and carefully open it.

Open the cover of the expansion tank of the cooling system. Remove the sound insulation.

Tighten the mounting bracket (fig. 2.232) coolant hose down and remove the hose from the radiator.

NOTE: Follow the proper disposal procedures for coolant.

Additionally, to drain the coolant from the engine, disconnect the water hose from the oil cooler (fig. 2.233).

Filling with coolant

NOTE: Only G 12 plus is allowed to be used as a concentrate according to the standard "TL-VW 774 F". Characteristic feature: lilac color. G 12 plus and additives to coolants with the mark: "corresponds to TL-VW 774 F" prevent damage from frost and corrosion, lime deposits and increases the boiling point. Therefore, the cooling system must be operated with an anti-freeze and anti-corrosion concentrate throughout the year. Especially in countries with a tropical climate, with high engine loads, a coolant with an increased boiling point reliably protects the engine during operation.

The freezing temperature of the coolant must be at least -25°C (in countries with an arctic climate - at least -35°C).

It is also prohibited to reduce the proportion of concentrate in the coolant during the warm season or when operating in countries with a warm climate by adding water to the cooling system. The proportion of concentrate must be at least 40%.

If the freezing point must be lowered due to climatic conditions, the proportion of G 12 plus concentrate can be increased, but not more than to 60% (the freezing point in this case will be around -40°C). If this limit is exceeded, the freezing point will increase again and, in addition, the heat capacity of the coolant will decrease.

When replacing the radiator, heater heat exchanger, water pump or cylinder head gasket, reusing the drained coolant is prohibited.

To determine the freezing point of the coolant, it is recommended to use the T10007 refractometer.

The amount of coolant to be added may vary depending on the vehicle configuration.

Work execution procedure

Install the cooling system hoses and secure them.

Screw the VAG 1274/8 adapter to the expansion tank (fig. 2.234).

Fill with coolant using the cooling system filling device VAS 6096.
