Caution: Drained coolant must not be refilled. Coolant is poisonous and cannot simply be spilled or disposed of with household waste. The administration of the city or municipality provides information on the location of the nearest collection point for special waste.
Drain
When repairing an engine:
Close the hose -1- from the radiator to the thermostat housing with a suitable clamp, for example VAG 3093.
Close hose -2- from heater core to coolant pipe with clamp 3094.
Loosen hose clamp -1- and close hose -2- from radiator to distributor with clamp 3093.
Close hose -3- from heater core to distributor with clamp 3094.
Drain the coolant by unscrewing the plug -1- in the cylinder head.
Open the cover of the expansion tank.
When repairing a radiator:
Close water hoses with clamps -arrows- before removing.
Fill
Install the drain plug in the cylinder head with a new gasket.
Set heater control to position "warm".
Remove grille.
Open the vent valve on the radiator. (If there is an air bleed bolt, loosen it about 3 turns).
Open the vent valve on the engine. A = open, B = closed.
Fill the expansion tank to the top (about 8.0 l).
Start the engine.
After reaching about 2000 rpm, top up the coolant. In case of air bubble free outlet through the vent valve on the radiator.
Fill the expansion tank to the top and close.
Switch off the ignition.
Raise the front of the vehicle by the cross member about 40 cm using a shim-mounted mobile garage jack or a double arm lift.
At about 2000 rpm, open the expansion tank again.
Close the vent valve on the radiator after the air bubbles have finished escaping.
Open the vent valve on the engine.
If required, add coolant and close the expansion tank.
Turn off the engine.
Add coolant to the top-up tank up to the mark "Max".
