When the coolant level is too low, a warning light comes on on the instrument panel. However, the coolant level should be checked before each long trip.

Special tool: not required.

Necessary consumables:
  • Antifreeze for coolant G12 Plus from VW/SEAT (purple colour, exact specification designation G 012 A8F) or other antifreeze marked "in accordance with VW/SEAT-TL-774-F", for example, Glysantin-Alu-Protect-Premium/G30.

If antifreeze for coolant G12 from VW/SEAT is poured in (red colour, exact specification designation G 012 A8D), then for topping up you can use antifreeze G12 rot or another antifreeze marked "in accordance with VW/SEAT-TL-774-D", for example, Glysantin-Alu-Protect/G30.

Note: Purple G12 antifreeze can be mixed with red G12 antifreeze.

  • Clean soft water.

Safety instructions

Open the expansion tank cap carefully when the engine is hot. Risk of scalding from steam! Place a rag over the cap before opening. Open the cap only when the coolant temperature is below +90°C.

  • When the engine is cold (at a coolant temperature of approximately +20°C), the coolant level should be between the MAX and MIN marks on the expansion tank of the cooling system. When the engine is warm, the coolant level should be slightly above the MAX mark.
  • To avoid engine damage, add large quantities of cold coolant only when the engine is cold.

Attention: If there is no G12 Plus or G12 red antifreeze, or antifreeze of the VW/SEAT-TL-774-F/D specifications, do not add any other antifreeze, but refill the cooling system with clean water. At the first opportunity, prepare a coolant with the required concentration of antifreeze of the prescribed specification.

  • When opening the expansion tank cap, first turn it only a little to release excess pressure. Then unscrew the cap completely and remove it.
  • If the coolant level drops over a short period of time, visually check the cooling system for leaks.
