Filling the cooling system with coolant is done on a cold engine. Procedure:
  • unscrew the expansion tank cap;

Caution: Place a thick cloth around the cooling system cap and turn the cap a quarter turn first to release the steam.

  • place the front of the car on supports and remove the engine compartment protection;

  • disconnect the lower coolant hose (Fig. 460) and drain the coolant.

To ensure that there are no air bubbles in the cooling system:
  • fill the expansion tank with coolant up to the top edge and close the expansion tank cap;
  • start the engine and let it run until the fan comes on;

  • check the coolant level in the expansion tank. Top up with coolant if the level is below the mark in the expansion tank (Fig. 461). The coolant level may be slightly above the "Max" mark if the engine is hot.

Once the engine has cooled down, the coolant level should be between the upper and lower control marks on the expansion tank. If this does not happen, then coolant should be added.

Caution! Do not replace or add coolant when the engine is hot - this may cause engine damage.
