It offers an unusually high level of active and passive safety equipment.
Active safety means include a well-thought-out design of the car and controls - from the chassis to the comfortable interior design; passive safety equipment includes an energy-intensive front body section and a rigid interior structure, a trauma-safe steering column, seat belts with inertia reels and an airbag system for the driver and front passenger.
The body structure is very reliable, but in an accident it distributes the impact energy in such a way that the middle part of the body in most cases remains uncrushed - it is mainly the front part that is deformed.
To protect passengers from side impacts, reinforcing channel beams are installed in the doors.
Beams made by seam welding with edge crushing provide directional deformation of the front part in the event of a frontal collision.
The passive safety of this vehicle has been tested to the utmost in more than 30 types of collisions.
With its own safety standards, which far exceed the norm, Volkswagen is far ahead of the most stringent American regulations.
Even the seats in the Volkswagen Passat help to effectively protect passengers. They have a rigid base, a strong platform and are designed in such a way that in the event of a collision, a person does not slide down if the belt is properly fastened.
The Volkswagen Passat is equipped with a safety steering column, the deformation of which during an impact significantly increases passive safety.
The new airbag system is an optimal supplement to the existing seat belts. Controlled by an electronic sensor, the airbag protects the chest and head of the front passenger (driver) from possible impact with the dashboard, windshield and steering wheel.
