The left illustration shows two spring tensioners. They are attached to the front coil spring.
On the right, individual parts of the front suspension strut are shown: 1 - suspension strut support: 2 - upper spring washer; 3 - thrust buffer, 4 - safety cover; 5 - damper (shock absorber); 6 - helical spring.
When mounting, a new screw cap must be fitted. But it is better to change the entire suspension strut body as a set.
Remove shock absorber.
Fix, that is, compress the helical spring.
Unscrew the self-locking nut SW 22 from above; at the same time hold the shock absorber piston rod with a SW 22 wrench with an Allen key.
Remove parts and arrange in order.
Slowly release the helical spring compression.
Remove the rubber bumper and shock absorber cover.
Unscrew screw cap.
Remove the piston and piston rod from the shock absorber housing.
Pour the liquid from the shock absorber in the housing to the used oil.
After inserting the new shock absorber piston, tighten the screw cap with a torque of 150 Nm, which cannot be done without a special tool.
After installing the cover and rubber buffer, compress the coil spring again, then install the suspension strut support together with its parts.
In the shock absorber of the previous design, the damping ring must be inserted between the upper and lower parts of the shock absorber support. When installing, talc is poured.
Directions
In the early years of model cars, it was not uncommon for coil springs to break. Often the cause was a damaged spring lacquer coating. When you mount a used spring, be sure to check the protective coating.
If a crackling sound is heard in the coil springs, then its coils are in contact. Therefore, it is recommended to pull special pieces of protective hoses onto the ends of the spring when the spring is in the dismantled state.
If you are installing used parts, they must be taken from an identical model. Indeed, between models "Golf" And "Jetta" there are some differences. Coil springs are marked with colored strokes that you can still see on the old spring. Then, when looking for a replacement spring, find a similar one to the old one. The heavy diesel model has more powerful springs compared to the carbureted machine.
