Replacing the rear shock absorber and coil spring (VW Golf 1)

The coil spring of the rear shock absorber is only slightly stressed. Therefore, a compression device is not required. The difficulty during disassembly is unscrewing the slotted nut, with which the upper spring support is attached to the shock absorber rod. A special tool 50-200 is used for this. Pliers can be used as an auxiliary tool for unscrewing the nut. A new hex nut should be used during assembly.

Remove the shock absorber strut.

Loosen the lock nut of the upper spring support, while holding the projection of the shock absorber rod.

Remove the spring support at the top, the coil spring and the spacer ring.

Use two narrow screwdrivers to pull out the spacer ring at the top, near the rubber stop.

Remove the rubber stop, shock absorber protective cover and lower spring support.

When assembling, tighten the nut on the shock absorber rod to a torque of 20 Nm.

Note: What is said about the shock absorber and springs of the front axle also applies to the rear suspension.
