Shock absorbers and suspension springs must be replaced simultaneously on both sides of the vehicle.

To remove, place the rear of the vehicle on stands and remove the rear wheel. Fold the back of the rear seat forward. Use a screwdriver to detach the seat belt buckle and remove it from the belt. Loosen the screw securing the seat belt retractor trim and remove the trim. Fold back the trim inside the luggage compartment, loosen the bolt securing the seat belt retractor and remove the retractor. Loosen the two bolts securing the upper shock absorber support (Fig. 5-7). Loosen the bolt securing the lower end of the shock absorber and remove the shock absorber from the suspension arm. Remove the projections of the upper shock absorber mount from the cutouts by turning the shock absorber approximately 45° and remove the shock absorber from the upper support.

Compress the suspension spring with a universal spring compressor. Remove the cap and O-ring using a screwdriver as a lever. Loosen the shock absorber housing nut while holding the shock absorber rod with a socket wrench. Remove the washer, upper rubber pad, upper support with foam rubber pad, spacer sleeve, lower rubber pad, metal cap, washer and lower spring support cup. Remove the suspension spring from the shock absorber.

To install, compress the suspension spring with a universal device and install it on the shock absorber. Install the lower support cup of the spring and install the spring, ensuring that the lower coil of the spring enters the groove of the cup as far as it will go. Install the washer, metal cap, lower rubber cushion and spacer sleeve on the shock absorber rod. Install the upper support of the shock absorber with a new foam rubber gasket. Install the upper support so that the straight line passing through the centers of the two threaded holes is at an angle of 50° relative to the axis of the bolt securing the lower end of the shock absorber (Fig. 5-8).

Install the upper rubber cushion, washer and tighten the shock absorber housing nut to the required torque. Install the ring gasket, press the cap with projections so that the two projections are located along the axis of the bolt securing the lower end of the shock absorber. Install the shock absorber with the suspension spring on the car in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following:
  • observe the required tightening torques for threaded connections;
  • tighten the bolt securing the lower end of the shock absorber after the vehicle has been lowered to the ground.
