Removal and installation rear wheel hubs (VW Passat B4)

To remove the rear wheel hubs, lift the rear of the car, place it on stands and remove the wheel from the desired side.

On vehicles with rear drum brakes, move the brake shoes away from the drum by pushing up the bar of the automatic clearance adjustment mechanism between the shoes and the drum using a screwdriver inserted through the threaded hole for the wheel mounting bolt.

On vehicles with rear disc brakes, remove the brake caliper assembly with the brake pads and pad guide as described in section "Brake system". Remove the hub cap, remove the cotter pin and the serrated lock nut.

Loosen the hex nut of the hub and remove the washer. Remove the hub, made integral with the brake drum or disc, making sure that the inner ring of the outer bearing does not fall out. Press out the outer bearing rings with a brass mandrel. Remove the inner ring of the inner bearing from the hub axle. On vehicles with rear disc brakes, also remove the protective ring.

Clean the brake drum or disc, check the condition of the components and replace worn components. If necessary, regrind both brake drums. Do not wash the reusable hub bearings before installing them. To install the rear wheel hubs, use a press and a VW 432 or 411 copper mandrel to press the outer ring of the inner bearing into the brake drum or disc. Press in the new seal as far as it will go using a mandrel of the correct size or with a hammer, striking it crosswise. On vehicles with disc brakes, install a new protective ring, observing the dimension of 9.5 mm between the ring and the brake mechanism shield (Fig. 5-11).





Install the inner bearing inner ring on the hub axle. On vehicles with rear drum brakes, sand the working surface of the brake drum and clean it thoroughly.

Place about 20 g of universal grease in the space between the hub bearings. Install the inner ring of the outer bearing on the hub axle, placing universal grease in it. Install the brake drum or disc in place, install the washer and screw on the hub nut.

Adjust the clearance in the hub bearings as indicated below. After adjusting the clearance in the bearings, lock the hub nut with a toothed lock and a new cotter pin.

Install the hub cap, adding about 10 g of universal grease into it.

On vehicles with rear disc brakes, install the brake caliper assembly with the pad guide and brake pads as specified in section "Brake system".
