The rack and pinion steering must not have any play when the steering wheel is turned from lock to lock. Adjustment is carried out by two mechanics.
Raise the car on the platform. Set the wheels to the straight ahead position.
When turning the steering wheel alternately in different directions (approximately 30°from the straight-ahead position) if the clearance in the steering gear is too large, a rattling noise becomes audible.
The second mechanic at the same time carefully screw in the adjusting bolt (arrow) until no noise is heard inside the car.
Attention: The illustration shows a ZF steering gear. In the case of a TRW steering gear (alternative steering gear) you must first loosen the locknut, and then turn the adjusting bolt. Tighten the locknut again after each adjustment.
Carry out a test drive to check the adjustment. If the steering is hard to move, if it itself does not return to the straight-line position when exiting the turn, loosen the adjusting bolt again a little.
