Checking the dust caps of the tie rod joints
Raise the car in front.
Illuminate the protective caps with a lamp and check for damage, paying attention to the presence of traces of grease on the cuffs and associated parts.
If the dust cap is damaged, for safety reasons, replace the corresponding hinge, as dirt is guaranteed to destroy it.
Check the tightness of the hinge nut, but do not turn the nut. Replace loose nuts.
Steering wheel free play check
Put the steering wheel in the middle position.
Through the open window, turn the steering wheel to the right and left, while observing the front wheels. The wheels should turn immediately following the steering wheel. Otherwise, adjust the steering.
Vigorously shake the tie rods by hand. Ball joints must not have gaps, otherwise the joints or rods must be replaced.
Checking the oil level in the power steering reservoir
The oil level in the power steering reservoir must be checked every 30,000 km.
Start the engine and let it idle.
Check the oil level with the wheels positioned in a straight line. The oil level must be between the marks «MIN» and «MAX».
If the oil level drops below the mark «MIN», replenish the level with G 002000 hydraulic fluid. It is imperative to add only new fluid, as even the slightest contamination can lead to a malfunction of the hydraulic system.
Note: The specified specification oil can be mixed with pre-1/89 automatic transmission oil (ATF). In any case, use oil G 002000 to top up the level.
With the engine running, turn the steering wheel several times from one stop to another, due to this, air is bled from the power steering hydraulic drive.
If oil was added, check the hydraulic actuator for leaks.
Tensioning/replacing the power steering pump V-belt
4 cylinder engine
As part of maintenance, the V-belt must be checked for excessive wear (fringing of lateral surfaces, transverse cracks), as well as the absence of traces of oil. If necessary, the V-belt must be replaced with a new one.
To replace the V-belt, loosen completely and replace. Pull on the new belt.
The V-belt is correctly tensioned if it flexes about 5 mm in the middle between the two pulleys when pressed with the thumb.
Tension, car models up to 9/93
Loosen bolts/nuts -1- and -2- at least 1 turn. Bolt -2- is not visible in the figure. It is located inside the console.
Adjust the belt tension by turning the tensioning nut -3-.
Then tighten the fastening bolts/nuts.
Tension, car models from 10/93
Bolts -1- and -2-, locking bolt -3- and nut -4- for fastening the tension bracket (if installed) loosen at least 1 turn.
Tighten the V-belt by turning the tension nut with a torque wrench. The torque of the nut is 4 Nm, for a new V-belt it is 7 Nm. Tighten locking bolt -3- of tensioning nut to 25 Nm.
Then tighten bolts/nuts -2- and -4- to 25 Nm.
Note: Nut -4- is available only for petrol engines.
