If there is too much clearance between the steering gear pinion and the rack, noise may be detected in the power steering gear (rattling), when a car drives on an uneven road.

The adjustment of the power steering mechanism in both steering designs under consideration is performed differently and is therefore described separately.

TWR type power steering mechanism

If there is a special key from Volkswagen for adjusting the power steering mechanism, then subsequent work can be done with the mechanism removed. If the steering mechanism is adjusted, the engine does not work.

The car is placed on the lifting platform from the front.

The steering mechanism is set for straight-line driving and from this position is turned by an assistant in both directions by 30°. A knocking sound is heard if the power steering mechanism requires additional adjustment.

The adjusting bolt is slowly screwed into the cover using a special tool until it can no longer be heard inside the car

A test run is made, if the steering does not return by itself back to the position of driving straight, then the adjusting bolts are loosened a little. If play in the steering wheel is still felt, then this bolt is tightened a little more.

Power steering mechanism type ZF

This power steering mechanism is adjusted in the same position.

The car is placed on reliable trestles at the front so that work can be done from below.

The wheels are set to move straight ahead.

Turn the steering wheel from the center position by approximately 30° and check whether rattling noises are heard. If they are heard, screw in the adjusting bolt until they become audible. During this adjustment, the assistant should continue to turn the steering wheel in both directions.

After this adjustment, a test run is made on the car to check whether the steering returns to the straight-ahead position on its own. The test run is made while observing the operation of the system and, if possible, on a highway with little traffic. Always work with the power steering mechanism very carefully.
