Adjusting the clutch pedal free play (VW Beetle)

Loosen the left rear wheel mounting bolts. Raise the vehicle and place it on supports. Remove the wheel.

If necessary, clamp the end of the clutch cable with pliers and tighten the wing nut until the clutch pedal has a free travel of 10-25 mm.

When measuring, press your finger on the side of the pedal and press the clutch pedal with your other hand until resistance occurs. You can easily determine the reverse (free) travel of the pedal with your finger.



After adjustment, make sure that both protrusions of the wing nut fit into the recess of the clutch lever.

Press the clutch pedal several times and check its free play again.

Lubricate the threaded portion of the clutch cable, wing nut and thrust ball bearing of the clutch lever with grease.

Install the wheel, lower the vehicle and tighten the wheel mounting bolts to 130 Nm (13.0 kgfm).
