When engaged, the clutch pressure plate is pressed by a diaphragm spring against the driven plate and flywheel, and thereby establishes a rigid kinematic connection between the engine crankshaft and the gearbox input shaft. Release bearing and release ring do not touch each other.
When the clutch pedal is depressed, the bearing is driven by a cable and the clutch release shaft. The release bearing compresses the diaphragm spring, the pressure plate moves slightly. This releases the clutch disc located between the pressure plate and the flywheel, and thereby interrupts the connection between the engine and gearbox.
