1. Pin to ensure a secure fit; 2. Lubricate the camshaft bearing with engine oil, the protrusions fit into the recess of the crankcase; 3. Clean the engine crankcase, blow out the lubrication channels with compressed air, cover the contact surfaces with a sealing compound; 4. Lubricate crankshaft bearing 2 with engine oil, maintain installation position, do not change; 5. Insert the camshaft plug with sealing compound; 6. Lubricate crankshaft bearing 1 with engine oil, the hole for the pin faces the flywheel. Note: since 11.85 the bearing has been modified! 7. Camshaft; 8. Crankshaft
1. Oil deflector; 2. Main bearing No.4; 3. Retaining ring; 4. Leading gear of the ignition distributor drive; 5. Distance ring; 6. Camshaft drive pinion; 7. Main bearing No.3; 8. Connecting rod bearing cap; 9. Connecting rod bearing shell; 10. Needle bearing (lubricate with molybdenum-containing grease MOS2); 11. Crankshaft; 12. Connecting rod
The axial clearance during installation should be 0.07-0.13 mm. When the wear limit (0.15 mm) is reached, the clearance should be adjusted.
Examination
Axial clearance is checked on the installed engine without removing the flywheel.

Attach the stand of the corresponding dial indicator to one of the two engine mounting studs and place the dial indicator feeler gauge against the flywheel.
Move the crankshaft axially in both directions and take readings from the dial indicator scale.
Note: Since November 1985, modified crankshaft bearing shells have been installed. In connection with this, the seals and spacer washers have also been modified.
Adjustment on engines produced before November 1985.
Install the flywheel with only 2 spacer washers. The crankshaft seal and flywheel seal ring remain removed.

Attach the dial indicator with the stand to the engine crankcase.
Move the crankshaft axially in both directions and take readings from the dial indicator scale.
Calculate the thickness of the 3rd spacer washer. Axial clearance according to the dial indicator readings minus (-) average axial clearance (for example, 0.10 mm) = thickness of the 3rd spacer washer.
Remove the flywheel.
Install the crankshaft oil seal.
Install the flywheel with all three spacer washers, remembering to install the flywheel seal ring.
Check the axial play again.
Note: It is imperative that exactly 3 lock washers are installed. The washers are etched with their thickness. If available, the washer thickness can be measured with a caliper.
Adjustment on engines produced since November 1985.

Lightly coat both sides of the spacer plate "1" with engine oil and install it so that the protrusion faces the crankshaft lifter.
Insert spacer washer "2" (∅ 81 mm) and screw on the flywheel. Parts "3" to "6" remain removed.
The axial clearance check is carried out in the same way as on models produced before November 85. Subtract 0.10 mm from the measurement result (average axial clearance).
Remove the flywheel, the axial clearance is adjusted by replacing both spacer washers "3". The thickness of the washers is etched on them. If necessary, the thickness of the washer can be measured with a caliper.
Attention: Two spacer washers "3" must be installed.
Lubricate all parts from "2" to "6" with engine oil and insert. Screw on the flywheel.
Check the axial play again.
