Removal and installation the flywheel, replacing the crankshaft seal

If oil is leaking from the flywheel side, the crankshaft oil seal must be checked and replaced if necessary.

Note: Since November 1985, modified crankshaft bearing shells have been installed. In connection with this, the seals and spacer washers have also been modified.

Oil Seal / Spacer Washers produced since November 1985.

Secure the flywheel with a special VAG device or unscrew 5 bolts with a hexagon socket head bolt key and remove the flywheel.

If necessary, remove the crankshaft oil seal with a screwdriver and replace it.

Note: Note the number of spacer washers for adjusting the crankshaft axial play, save the washers.

If a needle bearing needs to be replaced, remove the needle bearing using a suitable puller (with an internal diameter of 14.5-18.5 mm). First remove the spacer, felt and sealing rings from the crankshaft.

After washing the needle bearing in gasoline, lubricate it with universal grease.

When installing the needle bearing on the crankshaft, ensure that the inscription on the bearing can be read in the installed position. Carefully press in the needle bearing using the VW 207 tool or a suitable rod, resting it against the outer edge of the bearing.

Insert a new sealing ring into the flywheel.

Lubricate the felt ring and insert it into the crankshaft together with the spacer ring. Wipe off excess oil.

Check the crankshaft axial play.

Insert 3 required spacer washers.

Lightly lubricate the seal with engine oil. Screw the VW 191 device into the crankshaft and tighten the guide with the seal on it. If there is no special device, carefully drive the seal in with a pipe of the appropriate diameter.

insert a new rubber sealing ring into the flywheel.

Place the flywheel on the crankshaft, paying attention to the installation of the pin and tighten the bolts to a torque of 30 Nm with an additional turn of 1/4 turn (90°).

Caution: Always install new bolts coated with sealing compound.
