Replacing the crankshaft oil seal (VW Beetle)

If there are oil leaks on the flywheel side, it is necessary to check the crankshaft oil seal and replace it if necessary.

Removal



Remove the flywheel (see section above "Removal and installation the flywheel").

Remove the cuff using a screwdriver.

Caution! Perform the work carefully to avoid damaging the crankcase seal hole!


Check the flywheel for signs of wear on the working surfaces of the cuff chamfers.

Installation



Clean the bore in the crankcase and remove chamfers using a triangular file.

Lightly lubricate the hole surface with Curil sealing paste.

Install the new oil seal using the special VW 204b tool. To do this, screw the tool into the…


Install the new oil seal using the special VW 204b tool. To do this, screw the tool into the crankshaft and slide the oil seal onto the guide rod. Install the cuff and remove the mandrel.

If there is no mandrel, the cuff can be carefully inserted with light hammer blows through a wooden spacer.

Lubricate the edges of the cuff with oil.
