Replacing V-belt pulleys (VW Beetle)

The V-belt pulleys can be removed with the engine installed.

Removal



Remove the V-belt (see section "Removal, installation and tensioning the generator drive V-belt").

Remove the rear engine cover.

Loosen the V-belt pulley mounting nut, install a suitable puller and remove the pulley.

Installation



Before installing the pulley, check the condition of its seating and working surfaces.

Clean the oil-reflecting thread of the V-belt pulley and lubricate it with a lubricant consisting of oil and MOS₂-based paste.

When installing the pulley, pay attention to the correct installation of its key.

Check the ease of rotation of the pulley and ensure there is no beating.

Install the rear engine cover.

Install and tension the V-belt (see section "Removal, installation and tensioning the generator drive V-belt").
