Checking the belt drive pulleys for misalignment (4.2L petrol engine) (VW Touareg 1)

NOTE: After replacing the power steering impeller pump, air conditioning compressor, or power steering pump and air conditioning compressor bracket, check the belt pulleys for misalignment as follows to avoid damaging the poly V-belt.


Remove the power steering pump belt pulley.

Remove the poly V-belt.

Remove the diverter roller 1 (Fig. 2.6).



Apply template 3201 to the air conditioning compressor belt pulley.

NOTE: The air conditioning compressor pulley must match the power steering pump pulley.


If the belt pulleys do not match, align the pulley distance with 0.6mm thick compensation washers; 0,8; 1,0; 1.2 and 1.4 mm (Fig. 2.7).



Finally, check the alignment of the pulleys using template 3201.

Install the diverter pulley. Tightening torque: 25 Nm.

Install the poly V-belt.

Tighten the power steering pump belt pulley mounting bolts to a tightening torque of 22 Nm.
