Wheel alignment (VW Golf 3)

The wheel alignment is adjusted on the right-hand tie rod in exactly the same way as if it were an adjustable or non-adjustable tie rod on the left side.

Wheel alignment is measured in the usual way. It is important to pay attention to whether the values are given in degrees, minutes or millimetres. The wheels should be free and should not, therefore, be "pressed".

For all models of vehicles described in this book, the front wheel toe-in, measured in millimetres, is 0±1 mm.

If the toe-in has changed, it is established that the steering wheel spokes do not stand horizontally for a long time. This indicates that only one transverse steering rod has been adjusted. If this is the case, the steering wheel trim is pulled by hand, the steering wheel is removed and the wheels are re-installed for driving straight ahead. The steering wheel nut is tightened with a tightening torque of 50 Nm. The same tightening torque is valid for the lock nut of the transverse steering rod joint. If the steering gear cuff rotates, the wire ring is loosened by squeezing, the cuff is turned and this ring is released again. Check that the wire ring evenly holds the cuff around the circumference so that it does not jump off again.
