If the tie rod knuckle has been loosened, it is screwed back on. If there are difficulties in tightening the power steering dust seal, the inside of the seal can be lubricated with oil. This will make it easier to get back into place.
The clamping bolts and nuts of the cardan joint with the intermediate shaft of the steering gear are tightened with a tightening torque of 25 Nm. The bolts of the auxiliary frame on the front and rear sides are tightened with a tightening torque of 70 Nm, and from this position they are additionally tightened by a further 90°.
The bolts on the rear subframe bracket are tightened to a torque of 65 Nm.
The ball pins of the tie rod head are inserted into the steering gear lever and tightened to a torque of 35 Nm using new self-locking nuts. After checking the wheel alignment, the lock nuts of the tie rod heads should be tightened to a torque of 50 Nm.
After installation, the hydraulic system is filled and air is removed.
Features of installation and removal of the ZF type power steering mechanism
Removal and installation of the ZF type power steering mechanism is carried out in the same ways as described above, however, the following differences should be taken into account.
The small clamps on the power steering cuffs are only suitable for this mechanism.
The ZF type power steering seals have a larger diameter.
Large ZF type power steering clamps have a larger diameter.
Both transverse tie rods have a larger diameter at the location of the power steering cuffs, and therefore they cannot be installed in a TRW-type power steering mechanism.
