Release the power steering boot retaining clips on the appropriate sides and pull the rubber boots outward on the tie rods. Remove all visible grease.
Clamp the steering mechanism together with the toothed rack in a vice. To avoid damaging the toothed rack, use aluminum "cheeks".
Place a large wrench on the surfaces of the steering knuckle housing (key width 32 mm) and unscrew the transverse steering rod.

Screw the new tie rod into the rack.
Clamp the rack again in a vice and screw in the tie rod. The tie rod must be screwed in with a tightening torque of 70 Nm. Lubricate the rack well. Volkswagen uses special grease AOF 063 000 04 for this purpose.
Reinstall the steering gear cuff and secure it with a clamp, workshops use special pliers for this. If you do not have such pliers, then you need to pay attention to the fact that the clamp is well installed and cannot loosen.
If the left steering rod is replaced, dimension (a) must be set at a length of 223±1 mm.
Right tie rod (on which the wheel alignment is set) can be adjusted to this length approximately without tightening the lock nut.
After installing the power steering mechanism, the wheel alignment is adjusted and both lock nuts are tightened to a torque of 50 Nm.
