Two camshafts are mounted in the cylinder head. One shaft serves the intake valves, the other - the exhaust valves. The camshafts are driven as follows: one camshaft is driven by a toothed belt, which, using a chain drive, drives the other camshaft. One camshaft (exhaust) is equipped with five, the other shaft (exhaust) - six bearing caps.
The exhaust valves are filled with sodium. When replacing the exhaust valves, the old ones should be taken to a Volkswagen repair shop for scrap metal.
The engine is equipped with hydraulic tappets that do not require regular additional adjustment.
In many cases, the manufacturer does not specify the exact parameters for monitoring the working clearances of the valve stems, the dimensions of the unstressed part of the valve springs, etc., since these parameters are measured with certain calibers. If you have any doubts, you should contact a Volkswagen car repair shop, where you may receive more accurate information.
The valve spring seats, valve springs and valve stem seals are located in rather difficult to reach places, as they are located behind the cylinder head projections. The following description assumes that you have the necessary auxiliary tools for this operation and that you follow the given instructions exactly. We would like to point out once again that this is extremely important. When removing the valves, pay attention to how the parts are installed: tappets, spring half cones, inner and outer valve springs, valve stem seals and lower valve spring seats.
