The timing belt in a diesel engine is of great importance. It drives the camshaft, high pressure fuel pump, oil pump and brake booster vacuum pump. If the belt breaks or jumps one tooth on the pulley, then the engine is completely out of order, because the valves driven by the camshaft no longer close in a timely manner. The pistons moving upward then hit the valve heads.
The control of the camshaft and fuel pump in a diesel engine is associated with very precise pre-adjustment. For this reason, any change in the tension of the toothed belt or its replacement entails costly adjustment work.
Maintenance work carried out by simple means is limited to checking the condition and tension of the belt.
If the toothed belt is additionally tensioned, the start of the fuel pump should be checked or adjusted. If it is replaced, then another camshaft position adjustment is added. Both types of work performed require great professional knowledge and special tools. Our advice: install the toothed belt and adjust the camshaft position yourself. The machine should then be taken to a workshop to have the fuel pump feed start adjusted.
All these works are described in this book. A car enthusiast who was able to purchase all the special tools can make the adjustment himself.
