Removing the toothed belt cover
The purpose of the cover is to prevent foreign particles from getting inside, as this can damage the operation of the toothed belt. Dismantling is carried out as follows:
- unscrew the 4 hex screws of the cover;
- remove the cover.
Removal of the toothed belt cover is possible after unscrewing the four screws or nuts. Here you can see three of them (1-3).
Checking the condition of the toothed belt
Remove toothed belt cover.
The toothed belt must be free of cracks and oil-free.
Tooth surfaces must be intact, without signs of wear.
Turn the engine crankshaft to check the condition of the toothed belt along its entire length.
If the toothed belt is damaged, it must be replaced without fail!
Toothed belt tension control
Control is carried out simultaneously with checking the condition of the toothed belt. A special device VW 210 is used. Using this measuring device, the belt tension is checked at a certain length. The measurement is made between the camshaft pulley and the fuel pump pulley.
Remove cover from toothed belt.
With a rubber mallet, lightly hit the belt between the camshaft pulley and the fuel pump pulley.
Attach a measuring device and record the reading.
Turn the crankshaft once. Turn only by the crankshaft V-belt pulley with a special key or by the wheel with the gear engaged.
Repeat measurement.
Calculate the average value of the measurements taken.
If you get a value on a scale of 12-13. then it's all right. If the value is different, the belt should be additionally tightened.
Checking the toothed belt tension without a tool
Remove cover from toothed belt.
Use a rubber mallet to strike between the camshaft pulley and the fuel pump.
At the same place, by pressing your finger, determine the deflection of the belt. With the correct tension, the deflection is 10 mm. Otherwise, additional tension is required.
In case of doubt, repeat the measurement after turning the crankshaft again.
As soon as possible, the tension of the toothed belt should be additionally checked with a measuring device.
