Use a rubber hammer to hit the timing belt between the camshaft sprocket and the fuel pump gear.
Rotate the VW 210 control knob to loosen its spring.
The control device is installed between the camshaft wheel and the fuel pump gear so that the belt runs between the racks and the sensitive element of the control device.
Using the handle of the device, set the scale value to 1213. A steel tongue with a white horizontal line is protruding from the device from the side of the sensitive element. This horizontal line should coincide with the edge of the control device. If this is not the case, adjust the belt tension.
Adjustment
- install a control device.
- by turning the device handle to the right, set the scale to 12-13.
- tighten the tension roller until the white horizontal line on the steel tongue aligns with the edge of the device body.
- tighten the tension roller nut to a torque of 45 Nm.
- turn the crankshaft one revolution and repeat the measurement; if necessary, repeat the adjustment.
- install the upper part of the timing belt cover
- check the start of the fuel pump, see section "Checking and adjusting the fuel pump start".
Attention! If there are no appropriate adjustment and control devices available, the toothed belt tension can be adjusted in a simplified manner. The toothed belt should be tensioned so that it can be turned 90 degrees with difficulty with the thumb and index finger. But the tension should still be checked afterwards with the control device, avoiding high engine speeds until then.
