Diesel engines, except turbocharged engines with a capacity of 90/110 hp.
Remove the upper timing belt cover.
Hit the timing belt with a rubber hammer between the camshaft and injection pump teeth.

Rotate the handle of the VW 210 control device to loosen the spring.
Install the control device between the camshaft gears and the high-pressure fuel pump so that the toothed belt is located between the runners and the control device sensor.
Using the handle, set the value 12-13 on the control device scale. A steel tongue with a white horizontal line protrudes from the sensor side of the control device. This horizontal line should now be covered by the edge of the control device. If this is not the case, adjust the toothed belt tension.
Adjustment
Install the control device.
By turning the handle to the right, set the prescribed value of 12-13 on the control device scale.
Turn the tension roller until the white horizontal line on the steel tongue coincides with the edge of the device body.
Please note: This requires a spanner, such as MATRA-Vww HAZET 2587.
Tighten the tension roller nut to 45 Nm.
Turn the crankshaft one revolution and repeat the measurement; if necessary, repeat the adjustment.
Install the upper timing belt cover.
Check the start of fuel supply by the high-pressure fuel pump, see below.
Caution: If the testing and adjustment device is not available (abroad, accident on the way), temporary adjustment of the toothed belt tension can be performed. Namely, the toothed belt must be tensioned so that it can be turned no more than 90° using the thumb and index finger. After this, the toothed belt tension must be checked as soon as possible using a control device. High engine speeds must be avoided until such a check.
