Replacing crankshaft seals (VW Golf 2)

The front and rear oil seals must be replaced each time the crankshaft is removed from the cylinder block. A special tool and great care are required to install them. Both oil seals can be replaced without removing the engine from the vehicle if signs of oil leakage are noticed. A leak in the area of the rear oil seal can cause the clutch to slip.

Replacing the front oil seal

Since August 1983, the design of the front nose of the crankshaft has changed. Turbocharged engines have used a specially designed shaft since the very beginning of their production. In connection with this, the method of removing the front seal has changed.

Remove the V-belt, guards and timing belt in the manner described in the following chapters.

Remove the V-belt pulley and the toothed pulley from the front nose of the crankshaft. When unscrewing the mounting bolts, engage fourth or fifth gear in the gearbox and tighten the parking brake.

To properly use the puller shown in figure 62, you should screw the device No.3083, shown in Fig., as deeply as possible into the nose of the crankshaft figure 86. Then the same operations are performed as when replacing the crankshaft oil seal of a 1.3 l petrol engine (see chapter 3.7).

To install the oil seal on the engine located in the engine compartment of the car, a special bushing (tube) is provided. The sequence of actions is given in the description of similar operations of gasoline engines. In the case when the engine is removed from the car, you should use special device Nq 3083 (see figure 86 and 88). If there are no special devices, the installation of the seal should be done with improvised means and with great care.

Replacing the rear oil seal

Remove the gearbox, clutch and flywheel.

To remove the rear oil seal, use the tool shown in figure 87, or a screwdriver, which must be used with extreme caution so as not to damage the socket in the cylinder block.

If the engine is removed, connect the seal retainer and remove the gasket (fastening elements are shown in figure 209). Knock the seal out of the holder (from the middle outwards). The installation of the seal is carried out as follows:

Lubricate the seal with engine oil. Carefully seat the seal in the seat, pressing on it along the perimeter. Do not damage the working edge.

Then you should use the special device "2003/1" (see figure 89) or a self-made round plate that has a hole in the center for the crankshaft nose. Evenly tightening both bolts, install the seal in place.
