Before removing the crankshaft, which can only happen on an engine removed from the car, it is necessary to measure its axial play in order to find out if it will be necessary to replace the thrust half rings during assembly. Measurements should be made as follows:
Insert a feeler gauge near the center journal of the crankshaft as shown in fig. 208 and check if the backlash is between 0.07-0.17mm. The maximum allowable gap is 0.36 mm.
Please note that the measurement is made at the moment when the axial play of the crankshaft is fully selected. To do this, attach a wooden hammer handle to one of the shaft cranks and move the shaft in the axial direction. Determine the amount of play using feeler gauges of various thicknesses.
The amount of backlash can also be determined using an indicator connected to the end of the crankshaft.
