Measuring the axial clearance of the crankshaft (VW Golf 2)

Before removing the crankshaft, which can only be done with the engine removed from the vehicle, it is necessary to measure its axial clearance to find out whether the thrust half rings will need to be replaced during assembly. The measurements should be taken as follows:

Insert the feeler gauge near the crankshaft center journal as shown in Figure 208 and check if the clearance value is within the range of 0.07-0.17 mm. The maximum allowable clearance is 0.36 mm.



Please note that the measurement should be taken when the axial play of the crankshaft is completely selected. To do this, place a wooden hammer handle on one of the shaft cranks and move the shaft in the axial direction. Determine the amount of play using feeler gauges of different thicknesses.

The amount of play can also be determined using an indicator placed at the end of the crankshaft.
