Pic. 1.66. Scheme of air supply to the car interior
The VW Passat B6 can be fitted with either a manual or automatic HVAC system. Air conditioning is also not installed on all models. The location of the HVAC system controls is shown in Figures 1.64-65.
Air is taken in through the windshield fairing grille and enters the passenger compartment, passing through the filter and, if the heater is on, through its radiator. To supply air to the cabin, deflectors are used, with which you can adjust the direction and intensity of the air flow. The intensity is controlled by rotary knobs located next to the deflectors. Maximum system efficiency is achieved with fully open deflectors. If necessary, the outside air supply can be switched off, for example to prevent unpleasant odors from entering the passenger compartment or to quickly heat/cool the air in the passenger compartment. To do this, use the circulation mode switch. However, when the circulation mode is on, the air in the cabin quickly becomes stale and the windows may fog up - you should not use this mode for too long.
The HVAC system only works when the engine is running and the fan is on. The maximum efficiency of the heating system is achieved when the engine is warm.
Heating of glass of a door of a back and a windshield
The glass heating works only when the engine is running and is switched on / off by means of the corresponding switch with built-in K / L. The heating switches off automatically 10 minutes after switching on, or by pressing the switch again.
Air circulation and forced ventilation modes
When turning on the air circulation mode (K / L in the corresponding switch is on) The air inside the vehicle circulates in a closed circuit. Air from outside the car is not supplied to the passenger compartment. Circulation mode should be used when driving on dusty roads or in heavy traffic to prevent dust, odors and exhaust gases from entering the passenger compartment. In addition, the circulation mode allows you to significantly accelerate the decrease in the temperature in the cabin when using A/C.
Attention: Do not turn on the air circulation mode for a long time, because. at the same time, the air in the passenger compartment becomes stale, and condensation appears on the windows.
Fresh air mode (K / L in the circulation switch is off) is the normal operating mode of the HVAC system.
Note: Circulation mode is automatically turned off when the windshield washer is selected and is turned off when reversing or washing the windshield to prevent air with an unpleasant washer fluid odor from entering the passenger compartment.
Note: You should not smoke in the car when the circulation mode is on, as tobacco smoke particles settle on the A/C evaporator, and it will be difficult to get rid of the unpleasant smell in the cabin in the future.
Air conditioning
The air conditioner supplements the heating and ventilation system and provides cooling of the air inside the car.
The refrigeration unit operates only when the engine is running, at an outside air temperature above +5°C and when the fan is switched on to one of the steps 1–4 of switch B.
When the refrigeration unit is turned on, not only the air temperature, but also its humidity decreases in the cabin. Thanks to this, at high humidity of the outside air, also in the cold season, the well-being of the driver and passengers improves, and fogging of the windows is prevented.
Economical operation of the air conditioner
When the air conditioner is in operation, its compressor is driven by the engine, and therefore the nature of the use of the unit affects fuel consumption. In order to reduce the duration of the air conditioner as much as possible, it is necessary to consider the following recommendations:
- if the interior of a parked car is very hot due to solar radiation, it is recommended to open windows or doors for a short time to ventilate the car;
- make sure that during the operation of the air conditioner, outside warm air does not penetrate into the passenger compartment, for example, through an open window;
- If the desired air temperature inside the car can be reached without turning on the air conditioner, it is better to select the fresh air supply mode for the inside of the car.
Air conditioner malfunctions
If the cooling capacity of the air conditioner has decreased, it is necessary to turn it off and contact a specialist.
If there are irregularities in the operation of the air conditioner, then this may be due to the following reasons:
- outdoor air temperature below +5°С;
- the fuse has blown;
Check the fuse and replace if necessary. If the cause of the malfunction is not a blown fuse, the air conditioner must be turned off and contact a specialist.
- The air conditioner has temporarily switched off due to too high coolant temperature.
General instructions
If the air conditioner has not been turned on for a long time, an unpleasant odor may appear when it is turned on due to the accumulation of various kinds of deposits on the evaporator. To avoid unpleasant odours, the air conditioner should be switched on – also during the cold season – at least once a month at the highest fan setting. At the same time, open one of the windows for a short time.
It is recommended that you do not smoke in the car when the air recirculation mode is on, because the particles contained in tobacco smoke are deposited in the air conditioner evaporator. This leads to the fact that the air supplied to the cabin will have the smell of tobacco smoke for a long time, which can be eliminated with great difficulty, spending a significant amount of money to replace the evaporator.
At high temperatures and high humidity outside air, condensation may drip from the evaporator and form a puddle under the vehicle. This is normal and does not indicate a leak in the system.
In order for heating, ventilation and air conditioning to work reliably, the fresh air intake located in front of the windshield must be kept clear of ice, snow and leaves.
