Ignition and steering wheel lock switch
Pic. 1.67. Ignition Switch: 1 - ignition is off, steering is not blocked; 2 - ignition and preheating on (diesel models); 3 - engine start
The ignition and steering wheel lock switch, also called the ignition switch, is located to the right of the steering column (pic. 1.67).
The steering wheel is locked when the key fob is removed from the ignition switch. Before a new attempt to start the engine, the key fob should be returned to position 1 so as not to damage the starter by turning it off while the crankshaft is rotating.
The key fob can be removed from the lock in positions 1 and 2. To move the key fob from position 3 to position 1, push it all the way into the ignition lock. At the same time, the engine stops, and the key fob jumps to position 1.
Attention: Do not remove the key fob from the ignition lock until the car is completely stopped, because. at the same time, the steering wheel is blocked and maneuvering becomes inaccessible.
On models with AT, the keyfob can only be removed from the ignition switch when the selector lever is in the «R». After the lock is removed, AT mode switching is blocked.
Attention: When the engine is running in an enclosed area, there is a risk of poisoning.
Put the shift lever in neutral before starting the engine (with an automatic transmission, set the selector to the position «R» or «N») and securely apply the parking brake.
On a car with a manual transmission, while starting the engine, depress the clutch pedal - the starter should only rotate the engine crankshaft.
As soon as the engine starts, immediately release the ignition key - the starter must not rotate with the engine.
After starting a cold engine, it will work with increased noise for a short time, since the oil pressure in the valve clearance hydraulic compensators is still not high enough. This is normal and should not worry you.
Until the engine has warmed up to normal operating temperature, avoid running it at high speeds and full throttle.
When towing vehicles with an exhaust gas purification catalytic converter, do not continue to attempt to start the engine beyond a towing distance of more than 50 m. Unburned fuel may enter the catalytic converter and damage it.
Before trying to start the engine by towing, you should try to start it using the battery of another vehicle.
Gasoline engines
These engines are equipped with a fuel injection system that automatically ensures the optimum ratio between fuel and air at any outside temperature.
Before starting a cold or warm engine and during start-up, do not press the accelerator pedal.
If it is not possible to start the engine immediately, after 10 seconds, stop the starting process and repeat it after half a minute.
If the engine still does not start, check the fuel pump motor fuse.
After starting a very hot engine, slightly depress the accelerator pedal.
Diesel engines
Pre-heating.
After switching on the driving position («Ignition on») the control lamp, depending on the temperature of the engine coolant, signals or does not signal the need for preheating.
Starting a cold engine.
At outside temperatures above +5°C:
- the engine can be started immediately without preheating. During starting, do not press the accelerator pedal.
At outside temperatures below +5°C:
- turn the key in the ignition switch to position 2 - the preheating control lamp will light up. The lamp will go out after reaching a temperature sufficient to ignite the fuel;
When the preheating is on, all other large current consumers must be turned off - otherwise the battery will be overloaded with a large current.
- Start the engine immediately after turning off the warning lamp.
If the engine does not start, turn on the preheat again and then try to start the engine again as described above. If the engine still does not start this time, check the preheating fuse - it may be blown.
Starting the engine warmed up to operating temperature.
The preheating control lamp does not light up - the engine can start immediately.
Starting the engine after running out of fuel from the fuel tank.
If the fuel tank of a diesel vehicle has been completely used up, the process of starting the engine after refueling may take longer than usual, up to one minute. The reason is that the fuel supply system can only be freed from the air in it during the engine start process.
Anti-theft system
Electronic anti-theft system (built-in immobilizer) prevents car theft.
An integrated circuit is placed in the head of the key. With its help, when the key is inserted into the ignition switch, the anti-theft system is automatically turned off.
The anti-theft system is activated automatically when the ignition is turned off.
Note: The engine can therefore only be started using an approved coded original Volkswagen key.
Engine stop
After a prolonged high load, the engine should not be turned off immediately - it should be allowed to idle for two minutes to avoid a sharp temperature drop in different areas of the engine.
Attention: After the engine has been switched off, the fan may remain on for a relatively long time (up to 10 min) rotate even when the ignition is off. The fan may also suddenly restart after some time if:
- the temperature of the coolant will rise due to the presence of a large temperature difference in various areas of the engine;
- when the engine is still hot, the temperature in the engine compartment will increase due to strong solar radiation.
Attention: Therefore, when working in the engine compartment, be especially careful.
