Programs of work
The automatic transmission control system provides for various transmission programs. Depending on the actions of the driver or on the driving conditions of the car, either economical is selected, i.e. a fuel-saving program, or an active program, which can be loosely called «sports».
The choice of the transmission program is carried out automatically depending on the nature of the driver's work with the accelerator pedal.
With the slow or normal nature of working with the accelerator pedal, due to the early inclusion of higher gears and the late transition to lower gears, it becomes possible to save fuel.
So-called «sports» the transmission program is selected when the accelerator pedal is operated sharply enough. In this case, you should not press the accelerator pedal so vigorously so that you do not unnecessarily cross the pressure threshold on the accelerator pedal, after which there is a forced proactive inclusion of a lower gear, provided for in the gearbox control system - kickdown. When choosing «sports» mode, engine power reserves are fully utilized due to some delay in shifting to a higher gear.
Note: Depending on the driving resistance, for example when towing a trailer or driving uphill, a program is automatically selected in order to provide more traction on the drive wheels by downshifting and thus avoid constant gear changes.
Selector lock
Selector in positions «R» and «N» locked when the ignition is on. To remove the selector from these positions, press the brake pedal and press the button in the selector handle. Thanks to this, there is no situation when, due to negligence, one of the gears can be turned on, and the car will move completely uncontrollably.
To remind the driver to depress the brake pedal and press the button in the selector lever, a warning indicator lamp is lit in the instrument panel.
The design of the automatic transmission provides a delay device so that when moving from one position to another through the position «N» (for example, from «R» To «D») the selector was not blocked. Thanks to this, it is possible «rocking» stuck car. Only when the selector with the brake pedal released is more than one second in position «N», the selector is blocked.
At speeds above 5 km/h selector lock in position «N» turns off automatically.
Selector positions
Pic. 1.68. Automatic transmission selector lever
R - Parking lock.
Drive wheels are mechanically blocked.
The selector should be moved to this position only when the car is completely stopped. Before turning on and off the position «R» it is necessary to press the lock button on the selector handle. Before turning off this position with the ignition on, additionally press the brake pedal.
Attention: Never, while driving, move the selector to the position «R» or «R». The gearbox may fail and there is a danger of an accident.
R - Reverse.
The reverse position should only be engaged when the vehicle is at a complete stop and the engine is idling. Before moving into position «R» from positions «R» or «N» it is necessary to press the brake pedal and press the lock button in the selector handle.
In position «R» when the ignition is on, the reversing lights are on.
N - Neutral position (idle position).
When removing the selector from position «N» at speeds up to 5 km/h, as well as when the vehicle is stationary and the ignition is on, press the brake pedal and press the lock button on the selector lever. However, it is not necessary to press the lock button when from the position «N» selector is translated to positions «D».
D - Long forward movement.
Four gears shift from low to higher and vice versa automatically depending on the load on the engine and on the speed of movement.
Under certain driving conditions, it is advisable to temporarily use one of the positions below.
3 - Position for «hilly» sections of the road.
This position of the selector is recommended when, under certain driving conditions, with the selector in position «D» there is a frequent shift from 3rd to 4th gear and vice versa.
To move the selector to this position, press the lock button in the selector handle. Automatically shift up and down 1st, 2nd or 3rd gear depending on engine load and speed. 4th gear blocked. This also increases the braking effect of the engine in the event of a fuel cut.
2 - Position for mountainous sections of the road.
This position is recommended for long climbs and descents.
Automatically shift up and down 1st or 2nd gear depending on engine load and speed. 3rd and 4th gears remain locked to avoid unnecessary upshifts. This also increases the efficiency of engine braking.
1 - Position for mountainous sections of the road with large slopes.
Selecting this position is recommended when driving on steep hills and descents.
When you turn on this position, you must press the lock button on the selector handle. The car only moves in 1st gear. 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears are locked to avoid unnecessary upshifts. This achieves the maximum possible engine braking effect.
Cruise control in position «1» selector cannot be used.
Note: When manually switching in descending order, you can move to positions «3», «2» and «1»; however, downshifting takes place automatically only when the maximum permissible engine speed is not exceeded after the downshift.
Recommendations for choosing positions
Engine start.
The engine can only be started when the control selector is in positions «N» or «R». see also «Engine start.
Choosing a position for movement.
Before transferring the selector to one of the driving positions with a stationary vehicle and a running engine, always press the brake pedal.
When selecting a position when the vehicle is stationary, do not press the accelerator pedal.
If, while the vehicle is moving, the selector is accidentally set to the position «N», it is necessary to remove the foot from the accelerator pedal and wait for the engine to idle before moving the lever to any forward position.
Attention: When the engine is running, it is necessary to hold the car with the foot brake when the selector is in any of the driving positions, since even when the engine is idling, the transmission of torque to the wheels is not completely interrupted - the car «crawling».
Attention: If one of the driving positions is selected while the vehicle is stationary, under no circumstances should you press the accelerator pedal uncontrollably (including increasing the fuel supply by hand from the engine compartment). The car will immediately start moving - and this can happen under certain circumstances even when the parking brake is applied.
Attention: Before carrying out any work with the engine running, set the selector to the position «R» and apply the parking brake.
Starting off
Choose one of the movement positions (R, D, 3, 2, 1). Wait until the gearbox engages and the power flow reaches the drive wheels (it feels like a slight jerk). Only then press the accelerator pedal.
Stop
At a short stop, for example, before a traffic light, there is no need to change to a position «N». It is enough to hold the car with the brakes. The engine, however, should only run at idle.
Parking
To prevent the vehicle from rolling uncontrollably, you must always apply the parking brake firmly after the vehicle has come to a complete stop. Additionally, set the automatic transmission selector to position «R».
On a sloping road, first securely apply the parking brake, and then put the selector in the parking lock position. Thanks to this order of operations, the locking mechanism will not be too heavily loaded, and subsequently it will be possible to easily remove the selector from this position.
Towing to start the engine
Towing or pushing an automatic transmission vehicle to start the engine can never start the engine.
With a discharged battery, you can use the battery of another car to start the engine using the connecting wires.
Kickdown
kickdown (a device for forced proactive switching to a lower gear) provides the maximum acceleration of the car according to the given driving conditions. As soon as the pressure on the accelerator pedal exceeds a certain threshold value, depending on the engine speed and road speed, a shift to one of the lower gears takes place. Switching back to the next, higher gear will follow only when the maximum permissible value of the crankshaft speed is reached.
Caution: Be aware that on slippery roads, the drive wheels may begin to spin when forced to advance downshift. There is a risk of demolition.
Manual shift mode automatic transmission
This shift mode (system «tiptronic») allows the driver to manually shift gears.
To switch to the manual switching program, it is necessary to move the selector from the position «D» to the right. The transition can be carried out both on a stationary car and on the move. Numbers appear on the display when shifting gears «5, 4, 3, 2, 1». Shows the currently engaged transmission (see arrow).
Slight push of the selector forward (+) gears are sequentially turned up, and with a slight push back (–) - sequentially down.
When the vehicle is accelerating, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears are automatically switched on shortly before the engine reaches the maximum permissible speed.
If the driver shifts from a gear to a lower gear, the transmission control unit will only engage this lower gear when there is no danger of engine over-revving.
Selector lock
Selector in positions «R» and «N» locked when the ignition is on. To remove the selector from these positions, press the brake pedal and press the button in the selector handle. Thanks to this, there is no situation when, due to negligence, one of the gears can be turned on and the car will start moving completely uncontrollably.
