All engines
Engine with manual transmission: apply the handbrake, disengage and hold the clutch disengaged, shift the transmission to neutral. Disengaging the clutch, especially at low ambient temperatures, facilitates the starting process because the starter does not have to overcome friction in the gearbox.
Engine with automatic transmission: move the operating mode selector lever to position P or N. Depress and hold the brake pedal.
Caution: To prevent overheating of the starter and jumper wires, do not keep the starter turned on continuously for more than 30 seconds.
Gas engine
Turn the ignition key and turn on the starter, do not press the accelerator pedal. Release the ignition key as soon as the engine starts to run on its own. If the engine does not start within 10 seconds or immediately stalls, pause for 30 seconds and repeat the starting process. When starting a hot engine, depress the accelerator pedal slowly.
Immediately after starting, start driving, and only in very cold weather warm up the engine for about 30 seconds.
Caution: Successive failed start attempts can lead to failure of the catalytic converter, as unburned fuel enters the catalytic converter and ignites explosively when heated.
Diesel engine
With a cold engine: switch on the ignition and wait until the preheat warning light goes out. As soon as the warning light goes out, start the engine without depressing the accelerator pedal. If during start-up only individual flashes in the cylinders take place, keep the starter turned on until (no more than 20 seconds), until the engine starts to run on its own. If the engine does not start, turn the ignition key to position O and wait approx. 30 seconds. After that, turn on the preheat again and repeat the start-up process as described above.
Note: Since the direct mixture diesel engine has good starting properties, the preheating system is usually only activated when the ambient temperature is below 0°C.
If the fuel from the tank has been completely used up, then after refueling, the starting process takes much longer (up to one minute), since this removes air from the fuel supply system.
When the engine is warm, the preheating system does not turn on. The engine can be started immediately without pressing the accelerator pedal.
