Toothed belt tensioner on 2.8-I-V6 engine
- 1 - toothed belt tensioner,
- 2 - tension lever,
- 3 - drive element of the tension mechanism
Order of execution
1. Remove poly V-belt.
2. Unscrew the V-ribbed belt tensioner.
3. Turn the crankshaft of the engine to a position in which the piston of the third cylinder will be at top dead center. In this case, mark B on the V-ribbed belt pulley must be aligned with pointer A.
4. When the piston of the third cylinder is set to top dead center on the compression stroke, the large holes of the fixing plates on the camshaft pulleys should be directed towards each other. Otherwise, turn the engine crankshaft 1 complete revolution.
5. Lock the crankshaft in this position. To fix the crankshaft on the left side of the cylinder block, unscrew the plug and screw in a special rod VW 3242 instead of the plug. The special rod, entering the groove on the crankshaft, will fix it from turning.
6. Unscrew 8 bolts and remove vibration damper/V-ribbed belt pulley.
7. Using an 8mm hex wrench, slowly turn the timing belt tensioner clockwise until the pressure lever presses the pushrod until the holes in the pushrod and pushrod body align (see fig. Toothed belt tensioner on 2.8-I-V6 engine). Insert a steel rod with a diameter of 2 mm into the hole and the pusher and fix the pusher. Remove the hexagon from the tension roller.
8. Unscrew the bolts and remove the radiator fan bracket and lower toothed belt cover.
9. Remove the toothed belt. If the toothed belt is to be reinstalled, use a marker or paint to mark the direction of rotation of the toothed belt.
10. Loosen three turns (but do not unscrew completely) camshaft pulley bolts.
11. Using a puller, remove both camshaft pulleys from the camshaft seating cones. When removing the pulleys, the puller must rest against the bolts of the camshaft pulleys.
Warning: The camshaft pulleys must be free to rotate but not loose on the camshaft locating cones.
12. Install the toothed belt on the engine pulleys. When installing a previously removed belt, install it in accordance with the marked marks.
13. Install a special retainer VW-3391 that holds the distributor pulleys when pulling the toothed belt.
14. Release the tension roller of the toothed belt, for which remove the rod with a diameter of 2 mm, which fixes the tension mechanism. To ensure the required tension of the toothed belt, install the key on the internal hexagon of the tension roller and turn it with a torque of 15 Nm in the direction of tension.
15. After pretensioning the toothed belt, tighten the camshaft pulley bolts to 55 Nm.
16. Fasten the V-ribbed belt tensioner by tightening it to 55 Nm.
17. Unscrew the locking rod that holds the engine crankshaft from turning, and also remove the lock that holds the camshaft pulleys. Instead of the fixing rod holding the crankshaft from turning, screw in the plug, tightening it with a torque of 10 Nm.
18. Install the vibration damper on the crankshaft pulley and screw on the bolts, tightening them with a torque of 25 Nm.
