Warning: The cylinder head supplied as a spare part is a universal one and can be installed on either the right or left section of the engine block. When installing a new cylinder head, a plug must be installed on the front end of the head. Lubricate the plug around the perimeter with VW-AMV1880002 sealant and press the plug in until it is flush with the front end of the cylinder head, see Fig. Installing the plug on the front end of the cylinder head.
1. Unscrew the fuel hose from the fuel line and remove the fuel line together with the fuel injectors.
2. Remove the ignition coil together with the bracket.
3. Unscrew the intake manifold from the cylinder head.
4. Unscrew the coolant supply line from the cylinder head.

Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence for 2.8L Engine

1. Unscrew the secondary air supply valve and the intake manifold channel switch bracket from the cylinder head.
2. On the left cylinder head, unscrew the lower timing belt cover.
3. In the reverse order of that shown in Fig. 2.8L Engine Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence, loosen the cylinder head bolts one-half turn on the first pass and then loosen the bolts completely.
Warning: On later models, bolts with the "Polydrive" head profile are used to secure the cylinder head. To unscrew such bolts, you must use special keys, for example, VW3452.
4. Using a steel ruler and a feeler gauge blade, check the flatness of the lower surface of the cylinder head. Deviations from flatness should not exceed 0.05 mm. If the cylinder head has been reground, its height should be at least 139.2 mm.
Warning: When installing the cylinder head, a new gasket must be used. Remove the gasket from its sealed packaging immediately before installing it on the cylinder block.
5. Check that the new cylinder head gasket is the same type as the original and that the TOP or OBEN marking is facing upwards.
6. Install the cylinder head onto the cylinder block guide pins.
7. Insert the cylinder head bolts and tighten them finger tight at this stage.
8. Gradually and sequentially tighten all cylinder head bolts to the specified torque and in several stages in the sequence shown in Fig. Cylinder head bolt tightening sequence on 2.8L engine.
9. Before installing the cylinder head cover gasket, apply a layer of VW D 454 300 A3 sealant to the joints between the bearing caps and the cylinder head.
