Viscosity and brand of engine oil
At the factory, high-quality all-weather oil is poured into the car engine, which is suitable for any season in any climatic zone, except for areas with a particularly cold climate.
The classification of oils indicated below can be considered both separately and in combination with the classification of oils according to other systems. The viscosity grade of the oil should be selected according to the diagram below. If the external temperature is outside the specified limits for a short time, the oil does not need to be changed.
Important note
The development of engine oil production technology is ongoing, therefore this manual is relevant at the time of publication. In the future, oils that are superior in quality to those described may appear on the market, the use of these oils may be preferable.
Gasoline engines
- A - All-weather oils with improved anti-friction properties, specification VW 500 00 (1)
- B - All-weather oils, specification VW501 01 (1)
- B - All-weather oils, API-SF specification (2) or SG (2)
(1) no later than 10.91. (2) These oils should only be used if a better engine oil is not available.
Diesel engines
- A - All-weather oils with improved anti-friction properties, specification VW 500 00 (1) (for turbodiesels - only specification VW 505 00)
- B - All-weather oils, specification VW 505 00 (1) (suitable without restriction for all diesel engines)
Multigrade oils, API-CD specification (for turbodiesels - only if a more suitable oil is not available).
Multigrade oils, specification VW 501 01 (1) (for turbo engines - only specification VW 505 00).
Properties of motor oils
All-weather oils according to VW 501 01 and 505 00 specifications are the cheapest and have the following qualities:
- Applicable at any time of the year in temperate climatic zones
- Excellent cleaning properties
- Reliable lubricity at all temperatures and engine operating conditions
- Does not lose its original properties over time
All-weather oils with improved anti-friction properties according to the VW 500 00 standard also have the following advantages:
- Applicable at any time of the year at almost any temperature
- Reduce engine energy losses due to internal friction
- Ensure reliable cold engine starts even at very low temperatures
Directions
Seasonal oils, due to their limited viscosity, cannot be used all year round. It is advisable to use these oils only in extreme climatic zones.
When using multigrade oil SAE 5 W-30, long-term operation of the engine at high speeds and under heavy load should be avoided. For multigrade oils with improved antifriction properties, these restrictions are not valid.
Checking the oil level
The engine constantly consumes oil during operation. Oil consumption can be up to 1.0 l/1000 km. The oil level should therefore be checked regularly, ideally at every refueling and before long journeys.
Oil dipstick location (A) shown in the picture.
When measuring the oil level, the vehicle must be on a level surface. Wait a few minutes after stopping the engine to allow the oil to drain back into the engine oil sump.
Then remove the dipstick, wipe it with a clean cloth and insert it back until it stops.
Remove the dipstick again and check the oil level:
- a - oil must be added. Enough to raise the oil level to the zone (b).
- b - oil can be added. After adding oil, its level may be after in the area (With).
- c - the oil level is sufficient, it can not be added.
Under particularly severe engine operating conditions (e.g. long motorway driving in summer, driving with a trailer or: steep inclines), try to keep the oil level as high as possible but not more than the zone (With).
Note: If a round stylus without bends is installed, the upper and lower edges of the dots at the end of the stylus are marked MAX and MIN. The oil level must be between these marks. If it falls below the MIN·mark, oil should be added, but in no case above the MAX mark!
Topping up oil
Unscrew plug B from the neck on the valve cover and add oil in portions of not more than 0.5 l, while constantly monitoring its level with a dipstick.
In no case should the oil level be higher than zone C - otherwise oil may be sucked through the crankcase ventilation into the cylinders, which will lead to the formation of carbon deposits, oiling of the candles and increased oil consumption. In addition, in vehicles with a catalytic converter, oil entering the exhaust system can damage the catalytic converter.
Attention: When topping up, do not allow oil to come into contact with hot parts of the engine - fire hazard.
Close the oil filler cap tightly and insert the dipstick until it stops.
Change of oil
The oil should be changed according to the schedule specified in the service plan.
Caution: Keep used oil out of the reach of children until it is disposed of. Do not allow oil to enter drains or onto the ground. Due to the problem of disposal, it is best to have the oil and filter changed at a service station.
Engine oil additives
Although there are many different engine oil additives on the market, Volkswagen car manufacturers do not recommend their use. The warranty does not cover engine damage resulting from the use of such additives.
