Replacing the windshield wiper gear motor (VW Sharan 1)

It is recommended to replace a faulty gear motor with a new one. The only repairs allowed for the gear motor are replacing the gear reducer pinion, cleaning the collector and adjusting the limit switch. In order to get to the fastening of the rod system and the wiper arms, several parts must be removed.

Removal carry out the gear motor in the following order:

• turn on the ignition, turn on the windshield wipers and move the brushes to the lowest position (which is where they usually reside if the windshield wiper is not working). After this, turn off the ignition;
• remove both wiper arms;

• unscrew the plastic bolts (Fig. 347) of the fastening, carefully lift up both parts of the grille and remove the grille;

• unscrew the three bolts (Fig. 348) securing the air supply casing and remove the casing forward;
• after removing the air supply casing, access to the gearmotor trapezoid became available. Disconnect the plug connector from the gearmotor;
• using a screwdriver, remove the right lever;
• unscrew the bolts with a 13 mm socket and remove them. Unscrew the large nut with a 32 mm wrench and completely remove the wiper arm system together with the gear motor;
• remove the windshield wiper motor from the lever system;
• first remove the left arm from the ball heads, then the middle arm;

• lock the crank lever by putting the head on one of the bolts and placing the lever on the extension. Unscrew nut 2 (Fig. 349);
• remove crank arm 1 by rocking it from side to side;
• unscrew the gear motor mount and remove it.

Installation remove the gear motor in the reverse order of removal, following these recommendations:

• tighten the crank arm nut to 26 N·m and the air supply housing nuts to 6 N·m;
• apply a small amount of grease to the ball heads.
