Note: For all-wheel drive vehicles, some parts of the strut support have been modified. Vehicles with adjustable ground clearance are not considered (additional equipment), in this case you should contact a VAG workshop.

Removal

The car must stand on its wheels.

Release the luggage compartment trim fastener.

Release the luggage compartment trim fastener.

Limousine: Loosen the automatic seat belt retractor mechanism in the luggage compartment.

Limousine: Loosen the automatic seat belt retractor mechanism in the luggage compartment.

Unscrew 2 mounting bolts from the interior side. The picture shows a video of the rear left window side.

Remove the lower mounting bolts.

Raise the car slowly, see section "Lifting a car".

Caution: In a vehicle with all-wheel drive, make sure that the universal joints do not tilt down too far, as this may damage the constant velocity joint. Therefore, with the vehicle fully raised and the shock absorber strut removed, support the diagonal arm with a garage jack or jack stands.

Caution: In a vehicle with all-wheel drive, make sure that the universal joints do not tilt down…

Rotate the shock absorber strut until the 4 retaining tabs of the upper strut mount are opposite the recesses, then pull out the strut.

Disassembly

Please note: For all-wheel drive vehicles, disassembly must be carried out in a VAG workshop, so this work is not described here.

Remove the cap with a screwdriver.

Remove the sealing ring.

Remove the sealing ring.

In order to remove the shock absorber, it is necessary to compress the coil spring. The VAG workshop uses a special device for this.

Caution: Never release the shock absorber when the spring is not compressed.

Compress the coil spring using a suitable tool.

Caution: If the spring compression clamps are inserted between the spring coils, make sure that the spring coils are securely gripped and that the clamps cannot slip off. The spring must be compressed from both sides. The coil spring is compressed with great force, so use only a properly functioning tool. Never tie the spring with wire. Risk of accident!

Loosen the fastening nut. Hold the piston rod with a wrench.

Remove individual parts. Carefully loosen the spring.

Check the shock absorber, see below.

Assembly

The shock absorber can be replaced separately. Check the shock absorber, see below.

Note: There are springs with different manufacturing tolerances. Use springs with the same manufacturing tolerance on one bridge (identified by color coding).

The new spring is coated with a protective varnish against corrosion. Before installing the spring, examine it for damage to the varnish layer and restore the varnish coating if necessary.

Assemble the shock absorber strut according to Figure 42-622.

Compress the spring with a suitable device and place it on the shock absorber strut. Make sure that the end of the spring is adjacent to the guide plate.

Compress the spring with a suitable device and place it on the shock absorber strut. Make sure that…

Set the spring support to the correct position.

Set the spring support to the correct position.

Align the shock absorber support with the lower shock absorber eye.

A - shock absorber eye axis,
B is the shock absorber support axis, angle a = 50°.

Tighten the new mounting bolts to 25 Nm.

Insert the sealing ring.

Insert the sealing ring.

Press the protective cap into the shock absorber support.

Slowly release the spring.

Installation

Insert the shock absorber strut into the recesses in the body and fix it by turning the strut.

Screw the bottom of the shock absorber strut to the lever, do not tighten the nut.

Tighten the top of the shock absorber strut to 25 Nm.

Lower the car slowly.

Tighten the lower shock absorber strut mounting nut to 70 Nm (65 Nm for all-wheel drive vehicles). The axle beam and lever must be in a horizontal position when tightening the nut (unloaded vehicle).

If removed, tighten the automatic seat belt retractor mechanism in the luggage compartment to a torque of 40 Nm.

Install the luggage compartment trim.

Checking the shock absorber

The shock absorber can be checked by hand.

Remove the shock absorber.

Keep the shock absorber in the same position as during installation, then stretch and compress it.

Throughout its entire stroke, the shock absorber piston rod should move equally heavily and without jolts.

A defective shock absorber can also be detected during a ride by the crackling and rumbling sounds.

If the shock absorber is working properly, minor traces of oil on its surface are not grounds for replacement.

If there is a large loss of oil, replace the shock absorber.
