Removal

Loosen the rear wheel bolts.

Raise the car from behind.

Remove the brake drum or brake disc, see chapter "Brake system".

Remove the wheel hub bearings.

Caution: Bearings that are to be re-installed must be carefully protected from dirt. Tapered roller bearings must not be washed. Penetrated foreign bodies are not removed by washing the bearing.

Knock out the bearing races using a copper rod. In doing so, place the rod circumferentially against different sides of the race to prevent the bearing from becoming skewed.

Caution: Use only a clean rod to avoid burrs forming on the ferrule.

Wipe the axle journal and brake drum, as well as the wheel hub, with a clean cloth and alcohol.

Installation

Drive the bearing races "C" to the stop. The workshop uses the VW-432 device for this. If the device is not available, then the races are carefully driven in with a suitable pipe.

Fill the tapered roller bearing with bearing grease (lithium grease).

Lubricate and insert the inner bearing.

Lubricate the sealing ring between the sealing lips with bearing grease.

Caution: The sealing ring must be replaced. If the sealing ring is damaged or not installed properly, moisture can penetrate into the bearing. This leads to rapid failure of the bearing.

Car with drum brake:

Drive the sealing ring in until it stops using a suitable pipe.

Install the brake drum and at the same time insert the outer tapered bearing, see above.

Car with disc brake:

Drive the sealing ring in until it stops using a plastic hammer.

Fill the hub with bearing grease and insert it with the outer tapered bearing, see below.

Adjust the wheel hub bearing clearance.

Install the rear wheel and tighten the wheel bolts in a crisscross pattern to 110 Nm.
