General information
There are two different types of gearshift drive. On early release cars (until August 1975, gearboxes up to #GC 25084) the reverse gear lock is located in the gearshift mechanism inside the gearbox, and to engage reverse gear, you need to push the gearshift lever to the side (pic. I:24). On later machines (since September 1975), as well as on 5-speed transmissions, the reverse gear lock is built into the gearshift drive, and to engage reverse gear, you must press the lever down (pic. I:25). This shift actuator cannot be installed on a vehicle with an earlier gearbox (up to No. GC 25084).
Drive with side reverse gear (adjustment)
Engage 1st gear and adjust the position of the shift linkage front support plate so that the selector lever at the end of the linkage is in the vertical position. If you now set the gear lever to neutral, then its lower part should be vertical - otherwise, loosen the two bolts at the base of the lever and, moving the top plate, adjust its position.
If, after this adjustment, shifting is still difficult, adjust the gear selector rod mounting screw located on top of the gearbox housing. Before adjusting, set the rod to the neutral position and disconnect the rods from the rod lever. Press the rod into the gearbox until it stops against the reverse gear. Loosen the screw until the stem springs back out, then loosen the screw an additional 1/4 turn and tighten the locknut. Install the protective cap on the screw.
Bottom reverse drive (adjustment)
Place the shift lever in neutral, loosen the two bolts holding the lever plate, and slide the plate so that the two adjustment holes in the plate align with the corresponding holes in the lever housing (pic. I:23). The threaded holes for the bolts should be in the center of the holes in the plate - if this is not the case, turn the plate 180°. Tighten the bolts.
Loosen the gear selector lever clamp so that it can slide freely on the shift rod. Remove the gear shift cover from the lower part of the lever housing and slide it forward along the link (to do this, you may have to loosen the screws securing the lever housing). On 5-speed transmissions, the cover has a removable cover that gives access to the mechanism, so it is not necessary to remove the cover.
Install the shift link pawl exactly in the center of the lever housing retainer plate (pic. I:26) - distances "X" from the pawl to each edge of the plate should be the same. Use a steel strip to set the side clearance "At" = 20 mm between pawl and plate (for 5 speed gearbox "At" = 15 mm) - pic. I:27. While holding the shift lever in this position, tighten the selector lever clamp on the linkage.
Engage all gears in turn and make sure they engage easily and reliably. Check the operation of the 5th gear locks (in the presence of) and reverse.
If, after this adjustment, shifting is still difficult, adjust the gear selection rod mounting screw located on top of the gearbox housing. Before adjusting, set the rod to the neutral position and disconnect the rods from the rod lever. Loosen the lock nut and screw in the screw until the circlip of the center pin comes off the screw. Turn the screw the other way so that the circlip touches it and tighten the locknut. The retaining ring should lift slightly as the selector shaft begins to turn.
