Depending on the type of gearbox installed, various gearbox-related parts are installed on the vehicle - gear shift drive, clutch, powertrain support brackets, etc.
Two completely different types of clutches are used on cars with different types of engines (both types of clutch with mechanical cable drive).
Models with small-capacity engines (1.1/1.3 l) have a conventional clutch design, mounted on the flywheel and controlled by a mechanism located in the clutch housing.
On models with larger displacement engines (1.5/1.6/1.8 l) the clutch drive disc and flywheel are reversed - the drive disc is bolted directly to the crankshaft flange, and the flywheel is secured to the clutch drive disc. The slave disc is located between the flywheel and the drive disc.
The shaft with the clutch release lever and the release bearing are located at the end of the gearbox housing farthest from the engine and are connected to the clutch by means of a long pusher that passes through the hollow input shaft of the gearbox. The end of the pusher rests against the release disc, which is fixed in the center of the drive disc and actuates the clutch mechanism.
Due to significant differences in design, the repair procedure for different types of clutches is considered separately.
The most reasonable course of action in the event of wear or failure of transmission parts is to leave the repair to a VW representative or other specialist who has the necessary equipment.
In addition, it is possible to exchange a faulty transmission for a factory-refurbished unit, where all parts have already been checked.
