- Needle-nose pliers for removing and installing retaining rings - for disassembling gearbox components.
- Lifting device - to hold the engine in the air when removing the gearbox.
- Puller - for removing and installing gearbox bearings.
- Technological plate - for removing the primary shaft and bearing of the gearbox type 084 (see text).
- A set of soft metal punches and mandrels for removing shafts and bushings.
- Clutch centering device (mandrel) — for precise alignment of the driven clutch disc with respect to the flywheel and crankshaft (see section "Clutch").
All tool and fixture numbers are given in accordance with the VW tool nomenclature (see section "Gearbox repair"). Use only special tools to repair the gearbox.
Some gearbox components should be heated in an oil bath before installation. An oil bath can be prepared by heating engine oil on a gas stove in a metal container, such as an old frying pan. A thermometer with the appropriate temperature range will also be required to heat the components.
CAUTION: Use extreme caution when heating parts.
